NEWBERRY – On the night of Oct. 25, fans could be heard cheering as the ball was slammed onto the court while the Newberry High School Volleyball Team was on their way to victory over Union County.  Both teams played hard, and it was a heart-racing game filled with kills, aces, digs and fanatic fans cheering for their sides, but the Newberry Panthers got the upper hand.

The Panthers beat the Tigers in four sets with scores of 21-25; 25-18; 25-21 and 25-21. The Newberry team is coached by Coach Sarah Clark and Assistant Coach Taylor Whitley. It was a close game, but Newberry beat 30 years of history by overcoming its rival, Union County.

Union County won its last match against Dixie County 3-1 and is currently ranked in 9th place. With the win, Newberry became District Champs and are now in the running to become State Champs.

Kelly Cason, the one and only senior on Newberry’s team, led her volleyball girls with 12 service points, 7 aces, 10 kills, 1 block and 5 digs.  Newberry’s Kelsey Harris has 22 aces for the season so far, and said, “I am so proud of how much we have accomplished as a team.  Berry Bunch for life!”

Having the District Championship title in hand, Newberry has a 13-6 record with plans to continue winning to advance as far into the playoffs as they can.

Newberry takes to the court next in regional play, which will be held at Newberry on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., as the Panthers take on The Villages. The Buffalos have a 15-9 record, losing their last game against Taylor with only winning 1 set to Taylor’s 3 winning sets.  The Villages are currently ranked #8 in the Florida Division 1A Rankings while Newberry is ranked #11 in the rankings.

NEWBERRY – The archery competition at the Easton Newberry Sports Complex included 15 state champions, several national champions and USA archery team Olympic Silver medalist Jake Kaminski from this year’s London games.

The competition on Sept. 29, called a pin shoot, has grown to about 70 youth participants since the first one was held about two years ago, said Robert Turner, head archery coach at the complex. The shoots are held at the conclusion of two-month class sessions for area youth throughout Alachua County.

As the students improve their distance and scores in the sport, they earn new pins. Each year has seen an increasing number of students participating in the end-of-season shoots, which are intended to give them the feel of real archery competition. “They are enjoyable and have become so popular that their size rivals major shoots in the state,” Turner said about the local pin shoots.

This year’s shoot was particularly noteworthy for participants as they not only had their pictures taken with an Olympic medalist archer, they received signed mementoes as well.

Easton Newberry Sports Complex is a community-based facility that encompasses a full range of sports and offers a wide spectrum of classes and activities for archers. About 170 people will be taught this week in classes ranging from beginner to advanced levels.

“People don’t know it, but there are very high-level things going on over at the complex,” he said. It is one of the leading archery facilities in the country and houses one of the largest groups of youth arches in the state under the Junior Olympic Archery Development program. It has partnerships with the City of Newberry, USA Archery (USAA), and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Kaminski moved to Daytona after taking home the silver medal in the men’s team round for archery and is looking to share his passion for the sport with up and coming youth in the area, Turner said. He may use the facility to train for future dates, although this is not confirmed.

“Having him in the state means our talented youth could meet or possibly shoot next to one of the greatest archers in the modern era,” Turner said.

W_-_AustinCoach_and_Gary_2NES Coach Carl Randolph had his first job at Dixie County High School where he coached Gary Parsell when Gary was a student, and this past Thursday night he was one of the coaches for Austin Parsell at the JV Dixie County High School game that was played on the same field. Coach is a favorite of all the kids, but this was a special night for him and the Parsell family.
