NEWBERRY – For a few hours Saturday, downtown Newberry looked a little like an earlier time.
Classic cars and trucks lined the street with their hoods raised, drawing visitors who stopped to admire the engines, talk with vehicle owners and take photographs. Nearby, vendors welcomed shoppers beneath colorful tents filled with handmade crafts, baked goods, jewelry, stained glass, crocheted figures, seasonal decorations and other items.
The Sept. 19 Fabulous ’50s Festival, organized by the Newberry Main Street Organization, brought neighbors and visitors together for an afternoon of classic vehicles, food and shopping.
Gainesville Street Rods helped bring the cars to town. Among them were a vintage GMC pickup, polished coupes and muscle cars that prompted plenty of lingering looks and conversations.
The vendors gave the festival much of its color and personality. Tables held everything from pottery and handcrafted signs to flowers, candles and whimsical crocheted animals. Food and drink vendors offered festivalgoers another reason to stay awhile.
Then the rain arrived.
“What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon,” Newberry Main Street wrote after the event, thanking the vendors “who even stuck it out through the rainstorm.”
The organization also thanked Gainesville Street Rods for the classic-car display and the City of Newberry for helping bring the event together.
Despite the rain, the festival delivered what community gatherings do best: familiar faces, new discoveries and time to slow down and enjoy downtown Newberry.
