NEWBERRY – A Newberry health care practice will offer a limited number of free breast health evaluations Sept. 23 for women who are overdue for breast cancer screening or have encountered obstacles to obtaining a mammogram.
To Your Health and Wellness is adding the complimentary evaluations after appointments for a HerScan breast ultrasound event scheduled at the practice became fully booked. The expanded event, called Breast Health & Prevention Day, is intended to help women determine what screening they may need and how to obtain it.
“We hear from women who know they need to get their mammogram but keep putting it off because there is another step standing in the way,” said Jennifer Munksgard, owner and provider at To Your Health and Wellness. “Maybe they were told they need an order. Maybe they don’t have a primary care provider. Maybe they’re worried about cost or simply don’t know where to start. We want to help remove those barriers.”
During the evaluations, women will be able to review their breast screening history, discuss personal and family risk factors and learn about breast density. The practice will also help determine an appropriate next step based on an individual’s circumstances.
When clinically appropriate, To Your Health and Wellness can provide an imaging order or referral and help patients locate local imaging services and lower-cost screening resources.
The event will also provide information about dense breast tissue, which can make some cancers more difficult to detect on mammograms and is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. The evaluations are intended to help women understand how breast density fits into their overall risk and whether additional evaluation or screening should be considered.
Women do not need to have an appointment for the HerScan ultrasound event to receive one of the complimentary breast health evaluations.
The Sept. 23 event also will serve as an early start to the practice’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, which will continue throughout October.
“Our goal isn’t just breast cancer awareness,” Munksgard said. “We want to help women actually get screened. If we can remove one obstacle that has kept someone from scheduling her mammogram, that matters.”
To Your Health and Wellness is a prevention-focused primary care practice in Newberry led by Munksgard, a family nurse practitioner. The practice focuses on preventive care, metabolic health and lifestyle medicine.
