HAWTHORNE – A 49-year-old Hawthorne man was arrested after authorities say he fled from law enforcement at speeds exceeding 110 mph before a Florida Highway Patrol vehicle collided with his SUV and both vehicles crashed during a pursuit that crossed from Putnam into Alachua County.
Walter Zachary Brown was arrested following the Aug. 28 pursuit and faces multiple charges, including high-speed fleeing with disregard for the safety of others, reckless driving and drug possession. He was also booked on two outstanding warrants.
According to an FHP arrest report, a trooper joined the pursuit at about 11:06 p.m. after a Putnam County sheriff’s deputy pursued a black SUV on State Road 21 near Laurel Lane.
The SUV turned onto South Street and allegedly accelerated at a high rate of speed through the residential area before turning onto Northeast 255th Drive and entering Alachua County.
Authorities reported the SUV reached speeds exceeding 90 mph in a 30-mph zone. After turning onto County Road 219A, Brown allegedly drove faster than 110 mph and passed other vehicles across double yellow lines near blind curves and hills.
Near Southeast 24th Avenue, the SUV slowed rapidly and the FHP trooper attempted a pursuit intervention technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, according to the report. Authorities said Brown instead braked sharply, resulting in the passenger side of the patrol vehicle striking the driver’s side of the SUV.
The patrol vehicle went airborne, and both vehicles entered a ditch. The patrol vehicle struck a tree, while the SUV hit a fence and gate before also striking the tree, according to the report.
The trooper reported seeing Brown and a passenger, identified as Sarah Elizabeth Monroe, running from the crash.
As the trooper attempted to pursue Brown, Monroe allegedly tried to block him. The trooper moved past her and continued following Brown through residential property along County Road 219A, according to the report.
Brown allegedly jumped a gate and entered a horse pasture. The trooper followed him over the gate, at which point Brown surrendered.
Monroe initially complied with instructions to remain near the gate, according to the report, but allegedly ran and attempted to hide when another trooper arrived to assist with Brown’s arrest. Putnam County deputies later located and detained her.
Authorities reported finding methamphetamine and a straw during a search of the SUV.
After being advised of his rights, Brown reportedly acknowledged driving the SUV but denied that the methamphetamine belonged to him. While being transported to a hospital, Brown allegedly told authorities he had fled from law enforcement several times previously and had eluded air and K-9 units, according to the arrest report.
Monroe declined to answer questions after being advised of her rights. She was taken to an emergency room for medical clearance and later released. The trooper reported that a sworn complaint would be filed against her.
Brown was charged with fleeing at high speed with disregard for the safety of others; driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent violation; possession of a controlled substance without a prescription; resisting an officer without violence; possession of drug equipment; operating a vehicle at more than 100 mph; and reckless driving.
He was also booked on a warrant stemming from a March incident in which authorities allege he fled at high speed from Hawthorne into Putnam County. That pursuit was terminated, and Brown was charged by sworn complaint with fleeing after lights and sirens were activated, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
A second warrant accused Brown of violating probation in a 2024 case.
According to court records cited in the arrest information, Brown has five prior felony convictions and 31 misdemeanor convictions and has served three state prison sentences. His most recent prison release was in January 2025. He is currently on probation for intimidating a witness and is designated a violent felony offender of special concern.
Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard set bail totaling $244,500 on the new charges and $110,000 on charges associated with the March warrant. Brown was ordered held without bail on the probation violation pending resolution of that case.
