ALACHUA ‒ For decades, Horace Jenkins has been a familiar face at community gatherings, charitable events and neighborhood celebrations across Alachua. Known to many residents as the city’s unofficial “Godfather,” Jenkins recently marked his 75th birthday, prompting friends, neighbors and community members to reflect on a lifetime of service and mentorship.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Jenkins served four years before returning home and becoming deeply involved in community life. Over the years, he has earned a reputation as a trusted mentor and advocate for residents of all ages, from young people seeking guidance to seniors looking for support.
Those who know Jenkins describe him as someone who consistently places the needs of others ahead of his own. His commitment to helping others has extended through volunteer work with local nonprofit organizations, community outreach efforts and countless acts of kindness carried out away from the spotlight.
Jenkins is perhaps equally well known for another contribution: his cooking.
Whether grilling for neighborhood gatherings, preparing meals for charity events or helping feed residents in need, he has become a recognizable presence behind the grill at many local functions. Friends say sharing food has long been one of the ways he brings people together and strengthens community ties.
His volunteer efforts have touched numerous organizations and causes throughout the years. Community members say Jenkins is often among the first to step forward when help is needed, whether assisting with local events, supporting charitable initiatives or simply offering encouragement and advice.
As family and friends gathered to celebrate his milestone birthday, many viewed the occasion as an opportunity to recognize not only Jenkins’ longevity, but also the lasting impact he has had on the City of Alachua.
