JONESVILLE – Members of the Manhood Youth Development Foundation joined parents and community members on Memorial Day to honor military veterans through a day of service and remembrance at Pleasant Plains United Methodist Church in Jonesville.

The annual Memorial Day observance brought together young men from the organization, members of its Parent Support Group and local residents for a ceremony focused on recognizing veterans and preserving the meaning of the national holiday.

As part of the event, participants removed worn American flags and replaced them with new flags at more than 70 veterans’ gravesites throughout the church cemetery.

Organizers said this year’s observance also coincides with national recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, adding historical significance to the annual tradition.

Following the cemetery activities, participants gathered in the church family life center for lunch and leadership activities designed to strengthen communication and public speaking skills among the youth participants.

According to organizers, Parent Support Group member Mr. Albury led a public speaking session intended to help prepare the young men for an upcoming annual celebration event scheduled for June 7.

The Manhood Youth Development Foundation’s annual celebration is planned from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Santa Fe College Blount Center in downtown Gainesville and will be open to the public.

The Memorial Day event blended community service with mentorship opportunities, continuing the organization’s efforts to promote leadership development and civic involvement among local youth.

The annual observance also served as a reminder of the purpose behind Memorial Day, honoring military service and remembering those who served the country.
