Jack Dempsey Melvin, 72, died August 5, 2011, at North Florida Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Dempsey was born February 16, 1939, in Westgreen, Ga., to Kiler and Annie Lee Merritt Melvin.

Jack was a retired salesman with Flowers Baking Company (Sunbeam Bread). He loved caring for his beloved dog, Dee Dee and his kitty cat, Patches; he enjoyed any type of gardening, and was an avid Gator fan. His family said once he became your friend, it was forever, and he was the best helper anyone could have, with the ability to try and fix anything. But most of all he loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He and Lois celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary March 11, 2011.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; son, Michael (Irena); daughter, Karen Michelle; his brother, Zenas (Ozie) Merritt; and two grandsons, Kiler and Everett; many nieces and nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.

The family received friends at Forest Meadows Funeral Home, on Monday, August 8, 2011 starting at 10 a.m. with his funeral services being held at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Forest Meadows Memorial Park West.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements were entrusted to Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Cemeteries and Crematory.

Niles R. Barnes, “Barney,” 67, a loving father, passed away on Wednesday, August 18 at a Gainesville hospital after a brief illness.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force, having served in Viet Nam. He was a long time employee of South Coast Marine.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlice (Donny) Barnes of Largo; a son, Michael Barnes of Lakeland, Ga.; stepson, Bill (Noi) Chepren of Clearwater; step-daughter, Lisa Chepron of Delray Beach; longtime companion, Judy Chepron; two sisters, Donna (Richard) Metker, Paula (John) McCanless; mother of his children, Rebecca Kwasny.

Services will be held at a later date.

John "Johnny" Peyton Hale, Jr., 57, of High Springs, passed away on August 7, 2011.

Mr. Hale was born on December 3, 1953 to John Peyton Hale, Sr. and Christine Smith Hale in Gainesville, Fla. He owned and operated Hale Auto/Home Sales.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Jean Hale; his mother, Christine Hale Pettry of Gainesville; daughters, Erika (Bo) Dudley of Newberry, Fla., Kristie (Tommy) McElroy of Tampa, Fla. and Cheltse (Travis) Hale of High Springs, Fla.; a brother, Tommy (Kellie) Hale of Valrico, Fla., a sister, Debra (Lee) Hatch of Branford, Fla.; and one grandson, Peyton Dudley of Newberry, Fla.

A service will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the High Springs Church of Christ, 520 Santa Fe/441 South, High Springs, with Cori Lewis and Gene Burgett officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the High Springs Church of Christ, Playground Fund, P.O. Box 926, High Springs, FL 32655.

Virginia Vaughn Gaff, age 92, of High Springs, Fla, died Saturday, August 13, 2011 at ET York Hospice Care Center.

Mrs. Gaff was born in Fitzgerald, Ga., and moved to High Springs in 1951. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of High Springs.

Survivors include one son, Robert E. “Bobby” Gaff, Jr. and wife Doreene; two daughters, Latrelle “Sammie” Dixon and Mynelle “Roy” LaPoint; grandchildren, Monica (Preston) Towns, Dawn (Pete) Axson, Bradley (Jennifer) Gaff, Sammie D. (Kim) Dixon, Jr., Sara Beth (Phillip) Pomeroy, S. Patrick (Debora) Dixon; great grandchildren, Ashley, Brooke, Sammie D., Dixon III, Sadie Blue, Anna Cate, Isabelle, Corbin and Mia.

Visitation for Mrs. Gaff is Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Funeral services are Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of High Springs with burial in the High Springs Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of  Evans-Carter Funeral Home, High Springs.

Phillip Jerry Alford, Sr. passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010.  He was born on October 1, 1948 in Lake City, Fla., served in the US Navy and was a corrections officer at the Department of Corrections.

Survivors include his sons, Phillip J. Alford, Jr. and Robert G. Alford; daughter, Michelle Davis; brother, Steve Alford; sister, Barbara Bebbington; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, November 12, 2010 at Evans-Carter Funeral Home in High Springs from 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral service will be on Saturday, November 13 at 11 a.m. at Brooker Baptist Church in Brooker, Fla., with the Reverend Daniel Findley officiating.
