ALACHUA – Young runners from across the area recently put their endurance to the test as Legacy Park hosted a cross country meet that drew athletes ranging in age from 8 to 17 to the city-owned property.
The meet, held on the City of Alachua Recreation & Culture Department’s 105-acre Legacy Park property, featured boys and girls competing in multiple age groups, with most participants at the middle and high school levels.
Runners took to a course that made use of the property’s rolling terrain, hills and natural elevation changes, giving athletes a different challenge from the flatter courses commonly found in North Central Florida.
The event was organized through a collaboration between Santa Fe High School coaches and coaches from neighboring private schools. Organizers said participation has been increasing, particularly among high school runners, reflecting growing local interest in cross country.
The meet brought athletes, coaches and families to the property as groups of runners competed throughout the event.
Legacy Park already has an established 5K course, and city officials said the cross country meet provided another opportunity to use the expansive property for organized athletics.
The natural features of the land played a significant role in the course. Rather than competing entirely on level fields, runners encountered changes in elevation and terrain that added difficulty while showcasing the North Central Florida landscape.
Organizers said the turnout exceeded expectations and demonstrated the potential for additional cross country events at the site.
The city described the event as part of an effort to expand recreational opportunities and find additional uses for the Legacy Park property.
“New is good for a community. New sports. New events. New opportunities. New reasons for people to gather, compete and experience the place they call home,” the city said in announcing the event.
Officials said they are looking forward to hosting another event, although a date for the next meet was not announced.
The growing participation could make cross country another regular use of the property, alongside the recreational and community events already held at Legacy Park.
