NEWBERRY – Newberry Place became the latest neighborhood to host Operation Cool Down, the City of Newberry and Newberry Fire Department’s ongoing community outreach initiative aimed at helping residents beat the summer heat. Families gathered as fire crews arrived with hoses in tow, transforming the neighborhood street into a temporary splash zone for the morning.
Children lined the sidewalks with popsicles in hand as firefighters sprayed water high into the air, drawing laughter and applause from onlookers. Many took turns holding the hose themselves, running through the spray and cooling off under the summer sun. At one point, a rainbow formed in the mist, adding to the morning’s festive atmosphere.
Organizers credited the turnout to strong community support, noting that events like these give families an opportunity to connect while also introducing children to local firefighters in a relaxed, positive setting. Fire personnel took time to interact with residents throughout the visit, offering high fives and conversation alongside the water play.
City officials expressed appreciation for the Newberry Fire Department’s continued involvement in the program, emphasizing its role in strengthening ties between first responders and the neighborhoods they serve. Additional Operation Cool Down stops are planned in the coming weeks as part of the initiative’s summer schedule, with organizers noting that future dates may be adjusted based on ongoing drought conditions and water conservation considerations.
