Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horse Circus Draws Record Crowd
WALDO – A miniature therapy horse named Circus helped bring stories to life for dozens of children during a summer literacy program at the Waldo Branch Library on July 24, where attendance was so strong that the horse never made it inside the building.
Instead, families gathered indoors to hear the story while Circus appeared on a screen. After the reading, children lined up along the library sidewalk to meet the spotted miniature horse, take part in an art activity and interact with the four-legged visitor that had stepped from the pages of a book into real life.
The event was part of Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses’ Reading with Horses program, now in its 29th year. The nonprofit organization pairs children’s books featuring its therapy horses with personal appearances by the real horses, giving young readers the opportunity to meet the character they have just read about.
According to Gentle Carousel, the Waldo Branch Library program drew the largest attendance of the library’s summer programming season. The meeting room filled beyond capacity, leaving no space for Circus to enter the building.
The outdoor meet-and-greet allowed children to pet Circus, ask questions and continue the experience after the reading concluded.
Throughout the summer, Gentle Carousel’s Reading with Horses program reached more than 1,500 children and adults through literacy events at schools and libraries. The organization also distributed more than 1,000 free books to children to encourage reading during the school break.
Circus has remained busy beyond library visits. The miniature therapy horse recently joined a Christmas in July celebration at the Ronald McDonald House of North Central Florida, visiting children and families alongside Santa Claus.
The literacy initiative is one part of Gentle Carousel’s broader mission. The nonprofit also continued regular visits this summer with children receiving medical care, veterans and hospice patients, using miniature therapy horses to provide comfort and companionship.
Founded in 1997, Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses is a nonprofit organization based in North Central Florida that has earned national recognition for its animal-assisted therapy and literacy programs. The organization is perhaps best known as the home of Magic, the miniature horse whose work has been recognized by organizations including TIME magazine, National Geographic, the American Red Cross and the United States Equestrian Federation.
As it celebrates 29 years of service in 2026, Gentle Carousel continues to use its miniature horses to encourage reading while bringing smiles to children and families.
