HIGH SPRINGS – Although Santa Fe College has not finalized the exact times, dates and details regarding their first ever High Springs Community Education program, Jennifer Mullis, Program Coordinator for Community Education, has confirmed some of the classes she intends to present beginning just after Labor Day this year.

Classes will be held at the Historic High Springs Elementary School and Community Center, which is also home to the High Springs Historic and African-American Museums, 120 N.W. Second Ave.  Classes are tentatively scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, said Mullis.

“We are looking at between five and six classes per term to start,” she said, “but we are always looking for new course ideas and instructors.  Whatever classes the community is interested in having, we will consider.”  Listing yoga, self-defense, tai chi and classes on the history of the area as some of the courses she has seen offered in other cities, Mullis added, “We like to hire instructors from the community whenever possible as well.”

Fall A courses, which begin in September, include a four-week class called Exploring Water Colors, a short course called Simple Sewing in which students will make a simple project to take home with them, one free course, which will be held one time called Secrets of Effective Communication, a course in Aromatherapy and a progressive class on Beekeeping, which is expected to begin with classroom instruction and is expected to continue through Fall B and into the Spring course schedule.

At least one more course is being explored at this time, but Mullis says that class has not been nailed down yet.

Class costs, with the exception of the one-time free class on Effective Communication, are expected to cost $29 - $49, depending on the length of the class, said Mullis.  “We try to keep the costs as low as possible to encourage participation,” she said.

A final course schedule will be available near the end of July.  Many Alachua County citizens already are on the list to receive the Community Education schedule via mail delivery.  For anyone who does not or who wishes to see the schedule as soon as it is printed, it will be available online at www.sfcollege.edu/cied/communityed/ at about the same time.
