HIGH SPRINGS – From toddlers taking their first swings at miniature golf to great-grandparents settling in for a World Cup match, nearly 200 people spent a summer evening enjoying food, recreation and community during Family Fun Day.

High Springs Parks & Recreation hosted the July 11 event in recognition of National Parks and Recreation Month, with the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe presenting the celebration and local businesses helping provide food, activities and treats.

The miniature golf course behind the Pink Flamingo became the center of the festivities, where children and adults moved from hole to hole and tested their skills on special challenge holes offering FIFA World Cup 2026 prizes.

Nearby, volunteers kept the grills busy, serving hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage alongside chips, drinks, peaches and watermelon. Kona Ice of Gainesville provided frozen treats as families looked for relief from the July heat.

Soccer fans gathered for a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal watch party featuring Norway and England, while children took advantage of halftime to cool off during a splash party hosted by the High Springs Fire Department.

The mix of soccer, water, food and recreation drew families from High Springs and surrounding communities. Organizers estimated about 200 people attended, ranging in age from toddlers to great-grandparents.

Among them was a family from Virginia that stopped in High Springs while traveling as part of a World Cup trip, adding an unexpected long-distance connection to the local gathering.

The event was designed around a simple idea: giving families a place to spend time together while recognizing the role parks and recreation programs play in community life.

That goal was reflected throughout the evening as children raced between activities, adults visited with neighbors and several generations shared the same outdoor space.

Local sponsors included Worthmann Roofing and Gutters, Waste Pro USA, The Great Outdoors Restaurant and Kona Ice of Gainesville.

Behind the scenes, Parks & Recreation staff members Jason Kytle and Jason Hodges prepared the grounds and helped coordinate the event. David Miller of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe also assisted with preparations and event planning.

Baram Kim provided access to the miniature golf facilities and neighboring property, helping create enough space for the gathering.

Members of the Kiwanis Club and High Springs Soccer coaches staffed the grills, managed activities and helped keep the event moving throughout the evening.

The High Springs Police Department and High Springs Fire Department also participated, providing public safety support and helping families stay cool during the splash party.

National Parks and Recreation Month is observed each July to highlight the role parks, recreation facilities and local programs play in health, community development and quality of life.

In High Springs, the celebration offered more than organized activities. It gave residents and visitors a chance to slow down, spend time outdoors and reconnect with neighbors during a busy summer.

As the evening continued, the sounds of children laughing, water spraying and families cheering during the soccer match blended into a scene that reflected the event’s multigenerational appeal.

With support from local businesses, civic groups, city employees, volunteers and public safety agencies, Family Fun Day became a shared community effort, one built around food, recreation and an opportunity for families simply to enjoy being together.
