ALACHUA – After nearly two decades overseeing the City of Alachua’s finances and more than 25 years in local government, Robert Bonetti retired Thursday, ending a career marked by fiscal stewardship and a commitment to public service.
While much of his work took place outside the public eye, city officials said his influence extended well beyond budgets, audits and financial reports.
Finance departments often receive little public attention despite playing a critical role in keeping local governments operating efficiently. Colleagues described Bonetti as a steady leader whose dedication helped guide the city’s financial operations while also making time to serve residents in countless other ways.
They reported that Bonetti routinely worked more than 50 hours each week while remaining deeply involved in community events and civic activities. Outside City Hall, he coached youth sports, served as master of ceremonies for recreation, cultural and Chamber of Commerce events, called bingo during Fourth of July celebrations for senior citizens, accompanied seniors on field trips and volunteered at Babe Ruth World Series tournaments.
He also assisted nonprofit organizations with budgeting and became known among coworkers for offering encouragement and support whenever it was needed.
City officials said his familiar farewell, “I love you, and be blessed,” reflected the compassion he showed to coworkers and residents alike.
Throughout his career, Bonetti was presented with opportunities to leave for private-sector positions and other local governments. Instead, city leaders said he chose to remain in Alachua because of his commitment to the community and the people he served.
Colleagues described him as someone who balanced accountability with compassion and who consistently encouraged others to focus on serving the public.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, coworkers remembered Bonetti as someone who brought energy and enthusiasm to meetings and celebrations while treating fellow employees like family. They credited him with fostering a workplace culture built on respect, kindness and service.
In announcing his retirement, city officials thanked Bonetti for his years of leadership and the lasting impact he made on the organization and the community.
Although his tenure at City Hall has ended, city leaders said the example he set through decades of public service will continue to shape the organization and the community for years to come.
