Paul H. Smith, 89, of Shelbyville, Tenn., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Heritage Medical Center. He was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps. After returning home from the war he farmed, and raised horses in Alachua, Fla. He later owned horse barns in Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri specializing in Tennessee Walking horses. He was a member of the Walking Horse Breeders Association, a lifetime member of the Horse Training Association and served as a judge.
He was the son of the late Floyd M. and Barcie Jones Smith of Alachua. He is survived by his wife, Lena Newell Smith of Shelbyville; two daughters, Patricia Ann Luckett of Ooltewah, Tenn. and Brenda Kay Friar of Ringgold, Ga.; son Kenneth Floyd Smith of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Kathleen Smith O'Steen of Alachua and Floy-Ann Smith Gober of Arlington, Texas; brother, Fred Smith of Arlington; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild, and three step great-grandchildren.
A military funeral service was held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Shelbyville on Jan. 24, 2013.
