Elizabeth “Betty” Rawls McLeod Maxey was born July 5, 1929 and raised in High Springs, Fla. She attended Florida State University and moved to Roanoke, Va., in 1960. Betty was a successful business woman. She started McLeod’s Children’s Center in 1962, and she later owned and operated the Kiddie Korner on Jefferson St. in Roanoke. She and her husband, Sam Maxey, founded For Sale By Owner Magazine in 1992.

In addition to her parents, Burton Hansel Rawls and Elizabeth Eville Rawls, she is predeceased by her husband, Samuel C. Maxey, and her beloved sister, Carolyn Rawls Straley. She is survived by her three daughters; Linda McLeod Brown (Rea), Sharon McLeod Mitchell, Lauren McLeod Neighbors (Jerry) and son, Mark A. McLeod. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren; Matthew E. Mitchell, Kevin M. Tabor, Andrew R. Brown (Emily), Mary Elizabeth Brown, Emily Ann McDougall (Joey), Brooks A. McLeod, Tobin A. McLeod, and Rosemary R. McLeod.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Rd., Roanoke, VA 24019.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 2101 Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014 at High Springs Cemetery, High Springs, Fla. Online condolences may be made at www.lotzfuneralhome.com.
